TREATING ACUTE ILLNESSES WITH HOMEOPATHY

This page of Consultatherapist.com can give you instant access to a group of homeopaths, one of whom is usually available 24 hours a day.   Your appointment will last for ten minutes, and having an idea of the answers to some of the questions below before you contact us will mean that you have longer during your appointment time for your homeopath to gather other important information.   Appointments do not need to be pre-booked in this section of the website, you just contact us when you need a quick reply and we will do our best to give you a homeopathic prescription as quickly as possible.   You can choose to obtain your remedies at your own convenience, or use a Homeopathic First Aid kit which you may have at home, or our homeopath can post them to you first class on the same day as your consultation.   This service is included in the cost of your appointment.

Consultations between 7am and 11pm are charged at £10 for ten minutes.

Out of hours consultations between 11pm and 7am are charged at £20 for ten minutes.

What is an acute?
It is an illness that has a set course of progress where there is a clear beginning, middle and end. Examples would be a fever, chicken pox, an injury such as a bumped head or sprain, stomach upsets, colds, flu, earache etc.   Examples of a non-acute illness would be Parkinson's disease, dementia, multiple sclerosis.

Treatment
It must be remembered that often it is fine to let acute illnesses run their course, particularly if the patient is coping well and is in no distress.   If intervention is needed, then acute illnesses usually respond very well to homeopathic remedies.

In order for the best remedy to be selected to help the patient it is useful to think about some aspects of the situation:

  • The cause - what happened just before the patient fell ill?   Did they get wet or cold?   Did they suffer some form of shock or bad news?   Has some change occurred in their normal routine?   Loss of sleep?   Excessive worry or stress?   Was the onset of illness slow or sudden?   What time of day did symptoms first appear?
  • Does the patient have a temperature? - is it high, low or alternating between these?   Do they feel cold or hot themselves regardless of their actual temperature?   Is there a particular   part of the body which is hot or cold? Is there a lot or lack of perspiration?
  • Pain - Where is it? How does the patient describe it   - burning, bursting, cramping, cutting, dull, pressing, shooting, sore, stitching, tearing?   Does it extend to other parts of the body?
  • Does the patient have any discharges - What colour and consistency are they? Does the discharge smell?
  • Does the patient have a cough - is it better if they are sitting or lying?   What type is it? - barking, hacking, dry, loose, asthmatic, hard, short, hollow, spasmodic, suffocative, tickling?
  • Does anything help or make things worse? - are symptoms better or worse for the following:
    - time of day or night
    - being inside or outside
    - being warm or cold
    - eating or drinking (hot or cold)
    - light or darkness; noise or quiet
    - sitting or lying
    - having company or being alone
    - moving or being still
    - being touched
  • What is the patient's general state? Are they different from normal? Think about...
    - mood - irritable?   Restless?   Anxious?
    - Food desires or dislikes that are different to normal
    - Level of thirst - none?   Small or large quantities?
    - Sleep pattern

The significance of acute illness

Acute illnesses usually occur for one of two reasons:

  • If it is some time since the patient has had a constitutional remedy (ie for general overall health), then the appearance of an acute may indicate the need for more constitutional treatment as the effect of the remedy could have 'slipped'.   The constitutional picture is often clearest after an acute so this is a very good time to book a full homeopathic consultation with one of our homeopaths on the main part of the site.
  • If a constitutional remedy has recently been prescribed by a homeopath (within the last few weeks), the acute illness may be part of the body's way of clearing out toxins and thereby restoring balance and health.
